Sewer System Mattawan’s sewer system is composed of local collector lines, transmission lines and lift stations, and a main pump station with force-main to Kalamazoo. Current rate: $9.33 per 1,000 gallons. Water System “The Water Distribution system in Mattawan was declared operational in December of 1977. The water system is fed by three wells located at the pumping station. The wells have capacities from 350 to 850 GPM. Line sizes range from 6″ to 16″ in diameter while service leads are either 3/4″ or 1″ in diameter. These wells have two elevated tanks of 300,000 and 250,000 gallons which provide a pressure within the system of approximately 60-90 pounds per square inch.” Please visit our Wellhead web site for more information on drinking water safety. www.mattawanwellhead.com. Current rate: $4.40 per 1,000 gallons. Adding an Irrigation Meter Complete a Plumbing Permit. They are available at the Village Hall or here. The total cost is $160, which includes the application fee ($75); 3/4″ water distribution pipe ($5); reduced backflow preventer ($5), and a final inspection ($75). You may install the irrigation meter/splitter yourself, or hire a licensed plumber. Please note: the Village does not install irrigation meters/splitters. Once installed, contact Rich Goris, Mattawan’s plumbing inspector, at 269.207.1543 to schedule the inspection. Once you have an approved final inspection, call the Village Hall to schedule a time for a Village water technician to attach the MXU wire which will then activate your irrigation meter. They will need access to your house to accomplish this.

Streets and Roads Program
The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining roughly 20 miles of roadways within the Village. This includes, but is not limited to, repairing potholes, painting crosswalks and snow plowing.

Snow Plowing/Street Cleaning
In addition to street maintenance, the Mattawan Public Works Department is also responsible for the removal of snow from the streets throughout the Village. During the winter months, members of the Department are available on a 24-hour basis to ensure the timely removal of snow and/or placement of salt, as conditions warrant. To ensure maximum benefit to all residents, main streets and arteries are the first priority for snow removal and salting, followed by collector streets, residential streets and cul-de-sacs.

Residents can assist in the snow removal program by following these guidelines:

  • According to Village ordinances, no motor vehicle may be parked or allowed to remain on Village streets from October to May. Any vehicle in violation of this ordinance shall be considered a traffic hazard, and will be cited.
  • The Village does not service private properties.
  • All residents and property owners are reminded that it is against state law to dump snow onto public streets or snow plow across the road.

Street Signs
All signs for Village streets and many of the public signs throughout the Village are made at Rathco Sign Shop in Kalamazoo and installed by members of the Public Works Department.

Christmas Tree Pickup
The Mattawan Public Works Department also assists homeowners in the collection of post-holiday Christmas trees. Artificial trees are not accepted. Residents should contact the Village Hall at offices@mattawanmi.com or call 668-2128 to be added to the list for Christmas tree pickup. Before taking the tree to the curb, all lights, wires, ornaments, tinsel and other decorations must be removed. The Department converts the trees into mulch, which is then used throughout the Village.

Yard Waste
State laws prohibit yard waste in landfills. Accordingly, the Village of Mattawan will collect yard waste on the first Monday of each month, May through October.

Brush Pick-up and Yard Waste
Brush pickup takes place on the first Monday of every month, May through October. Brown paper bags for yard waste may be purchased at local retailers. Allowable yard waste includes grass clippings and leaves but does not include roots and landscape materials. The Village will pick up shrubs, bushes, and tree limbs, however, the bushes and shrubs must be cut up and the dirt removed. All large branches must be facing one direction and neatly placed at the curb. Do not place them on the road. If there is a severe storm with high winds, the Village may add additional days to this schedule.

All tree and/or landscaping companies that do work in the Village of Mattawan are responsible for disposing of all brush, limbs, and stumps. The Village will not pick up any of these items left by landscaping companies.
